In Arizona

outside of a bar in Old Town, Scottsdale

Months ago we had planned this trip, only because my cousin is having her first baby shower. We decided to make a trip out of it, by discovering what Phoenix/Scottsdale has to offer and hiking the Grand Canyon. We even managed to get a camping permit and were thrilled to finally use our camping gear that we got from our wedding registry. Obviously, all of this was planned before the wacky immigration law passed. We already have a boatload of stories to tell, so stay tuned for more on our encounters in Arizona. For the next three days, we will be truly unplugged and completely immersed in nature.

No Offfice To Go To…

Tomorrow is bike to work day, an event I would definitely participate in, if I had an office to go to. Until recently, I was part of the telecommuting culture- my office was in Houston, TX and I live in San Francisco, CA. I have not had an office to go to in about 3 years. So I made offices out of my bedroom, my dining room, many, many cafes, airports, and even in the middle of a rain forest in Jamaica. Albeit, I was sitting on the balcony of our five star room.  My laptop became an extension of myself. Telecommuting had liberated me in so many ways. I was rather stress-free- no fighting traffic, no bad office coffee, or indulging the office’s Gossip Girl. I, also, got to set my schedule. As long as I met all deadlines and was available by phone and email, I could travel, socialize or take care of personal business as I wished. Another bonus, I didn’t have to get out of  my PJs. There was a bonus for the environment and economy, as well.  A gallon of gasoline produces 19.4 pounds of carbon dioxide; I’ve reduced my carbon footprint by 3,725 pounds a year! I also used the money not spent on $4/gallon of gasoline on really nice shoes.

Boot Camp Progress

Week 5: I was really proud of myself last week. I was able to run continuously without gasping for air or feeling like I was going to throw-up. I was ahead of the class at times or right in the middle- not last. And I was still sore all week. (I think of being sore as a victory).  This morning’s workout was  good; I did better than I thought. Am I seeing results? I feel stronger and healthier, but I don’t notice any weight loss. I think I am building more muscle, which weighs more than fat. However, my waist is not shrinking! Going to keep at it and continue to stop eating sugary foods.

Week 4: Some days are harder and some easier. Just when I am getting used to the drills, something new is added to the mix. Which is a good thing, because the body has the incredible ability to adapt and get bored. I am eating a lot more, because I am truly hungrier. We blast about a 1000 or so calories in 60 minutes and my metabolism is in high gear for rest of the day. It’s a good feeling. But I have to try really hard to keep snacking smarter. Almond butter and organic apples, homemade dressing with salads, eggs, lentils, and water-based curries (most in restaurants are made with whole fat yogurt and cream).
